Eye Makeup- Safe?
August 18, 2009 by Jo
Many women suffer from eye infections, eye allergies and eyelid irritation from usingĀ eye makeup products.
Although most makeup products are mostly manufactured under strict hygeine and safety standards, problems can still arise.
By the nature of the way we use eye cosmetics especially with eyeshadows we are constantly introducing bacteria from the skin into our products. One way to minimise this to to regulary was the brushes we use in warm, soapy water once a week .
Some products cause an allergic reaction – it may only be the one ingredient that causes us a problem and you should cease using them immediately as the allergic reaction could continue to get worse. Often the highly pigmented colours of blues and greens can cause an allergic reaction.
- Basic safety precautions such as washing your hands before applying eye makeup will also help to reduce the chance of irritating the eye area or introducing bacteria.
- Never share your eye makeup with other people.
- Mascara should only be kept for up to three months and then discarded. Eye infections can be potentially a threat to our sight and so even if we haven”t finished the mascara, throw used ones away.
- Never use saliva to mix with eyeshadow to make the colour more intense – always use water.
- Keep your cosmetics in a place where the temperature does not get too hot to avoid them spoiling, especially don’t leave them in the car in summer. Preservatives can lose their efficacy if they are heated.
- If you do have an eye infection, don’t use any eye makeup products as infections can easily travel from one eye to another. Discard any mascara you are currently using. Wash all brushes thoroughly.
- Be gentle when removing eye makeup the skin around the eye is delicate and sensitive.
