Nano Sunscreens
September 2, 2009 by Jo
Following up on a recent blog on the potential safety of nano sunscreens, scientists at the Biomedical Sciences Institute in Coleraine, Northern Ireland have received a grant from the European Union to study if there is a link between brain diseases and the nano particles in sunscreens.
The project named NeuroNano involves scientists from a number of different universities and is jointly headed by Dr Christian Holsten and Professor Vyvyan Howard who has speculated that if their study comes up with further evidence about the detrimental effects of nano particles, then regulations in the cosmetic and personal care industries along with government regulations will be impacted upon.
This follows on from the report released by Friends of the Earth that nano particles in sunscreens could have the potential to pose health threats and did not make the sunscreens more effective. They concluded that sunscreens containing nano particles should be viewed with caution by the public.
